Active Aging

For Samarinda, “active ageing” means participating in a full range of social, cultural and spiritual activities as well as being physically active.

If ageing is to be a positive experience, longer life must be accompanied by continuing opportunities for health, participation and security. The World Health Organisation has adopted the term ‘active ageing’ to express the process for achieving this vision.

We are committed to creating opportunities that encourage and enable people to be active as they age. Samarinda’s  active ageing initiatives include:

  • Our transport fleet ensures older members of our community remain connected to services, places and people.
  • Our Social ‘Hub’ provides a place to engage with others, participate in chosen pursuits, learn something new, and access a variety of exercise programs to maintain wellbeing.
  • Our co-designed service development approach and client directed service delivery offers our clients and the community genuine partnership and recognition of their valuable co-contribution.

Over 300 community volunteers provide transport, deliver meals, maintain gardens, facilitate groups and share skills.
