Day Respite

The Samarinda Day Respite program at Elsie Salter House is an inclusive specialist day program operating Monday – Friday for people living at home with dementia, memory loss, or confusion. Importantly, the program also provides planned respite for those caring for the person at home.

Located in central Ashburton, Elsie Salter House has been purposefully renovated to create a welcoming, homelike environment that is safe and secure.

Our qualified staff and trained local volunteers provide individualised care and support to assist each client (and their carers) to stay active, involved and independent at home.

Community and centre-based activities

We identify the interests of each client and facilitate both individual and small social group activities such as gardening, craft, cooking, woodwork, puzzles, current affairs, music, visiting pets and local community walks.

A hot three course lunch and morning tea is included each day.

Our community bus is equipped with a hoist and additional steps for easy access. We can provide transport to and from Elsie Salter House for clients living within a 5km radius. We also plan weekly group excursions to favourite and familiar destinations.

How to access the program?

The Day Respite program is subsidised by the Australian Government. It can be accessed through the Commonwealth Home Support Program, Home Care Packages Programs, National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) or through a private fee for service arrangement.
Samarinda can help you to contact My Aged Care, which assesses your eligibility for Day Respite as part of a government funded program. The assessment is free and conducted in your home. If you wish, we can be with you during the assessment process.
